Of Kingston under Capt. Thos. Davis ran aground on Goal Island Reef near Port Hope. Rescue attempts by Port Hope residents failed. Davis and Frederick Eccles tried to swim to shore and did so but were unconscious when rescued. Alexander McDowall, Solomon Hammond and his brother Hammond were drowned. Goods for merchant J. Beatty (Port Hope?) were lost.

Elections Cataraqui Ward mtg at Henry Bowman's Inn. T.O. Butler was chairman. A. Thibodo was nominated to run unopposed as alderman by Wm Proctor and Robert Spencer. Peter Higgins and John Dunn moved that Michael McCunniffe run as councillor. Charles Martin and W. Bailey nominated Dr. Meagher as candidate for councillor. Henry Bartliff and John Mackenzie nominated Allan Maclean as alderman but the motion was lost. Charles Martin and Henry Bowman nominated Robert Anglen as alderman. This motion and Henry Bartliff who nominated instead, H.W. Benson. W. Proctor and Robert Morrell suggested that Benson take over from T.O. Butler as chairman. Thanks to Butler was moved by Wm Bailey and James Gourley. Bernard Fitzpatrick was secretary.
