Schooner Canada of Kingston under Capt. Thos. Davis ran aground on Gull Island Reef near Port Hope. Rescue attempts by Port Hope residents failed. Davis and Frederick Eccles, tried to swim to shore and did so but were unconscious when rescued. Alexander McDowall, Solomon Hammond and his brothel Hammond were drowned. Goods for merchant J, Batty Port Hope were lost.
